Sphagnum tenellum
- Small, inconspicuous species
- Often a pallid yellow-green, but bright green or olive colouration possible
- Delicate; readily fragmenting when handled
- The leaves at the tips of the spreading branches diverge in a very characteristic manner; which has been likened to that of the open beak of a bird
- Typically forms inconspicuous low patches and mats
- Often found on wet heaths, typically on patches of open ground between vegetation
