Bygone Industries in the Peak (PDJ Vol. 3)
Peak District Journal of Natural History and Archaeology 3Bygone Industries in the Peak
A5, 112 pp, Softback
Format Options: Black & White
This book was developed from a series of articles in the Peak Advertiser and looks at the interesting history of industry in the Peakland. The author takes the Peak as a broad and deliberately not too well-defined area, as flexibility is needed when discussing networked and interconnected industries. Also, 'bygone' is used loosely, as many industries remain at craft or workshop level, while things like cheese making still occur on quite a large scale. This volume covers a wide range of industries, from lace making to lead mining and from tanning to the wool trade. The Peak has a very interesting and varied industrial history, and reading this will open your eyes to the history that is largely lost now, to Peaklanders and visitors alike.
